Summary

The Prologue, titled “List,” is a list of the names of nearly 60 people impacted by drugs. The list ends with the narrator and her sister’s mother and father.

In “Now,” Michaela “Mickey” Fitzpatrick is a patrol officer in the Kensington area of Philadelphia. She has been working with a new officer, Eddie Lafferty, for about an hour when a call comes in of a dead woman on the Gurney Street tracks. Mickey immediately thinks that it is her sister, Kacey. She reminds herself that the statistics are against it.
