Agent Chris Shane
Chris Shane is the narrator and protagonist of the novel. He has been a Haden since shortly after birth. In his youth, Chris was the poster child of the Haden acceptance movement. As an adult, Chris is trying to shrug off this fame and find his own place in the world as an FBI. agent. He also exerts his initiative for independence by finding a home for himself in a townhouse with other Haden professionals.
At the onset of the political unrest as a result of the Abrams-Kettering bill, Chris is labeled as a traitor to the Haden cause. Throughout the investigation, Chris has been the one to travel to the different locations, on account of his ability to integrate into any personal transport. Since he can do this, he becomes the main liaison between the FBI and the Navajo Nation.
