Chapter 12 Summary

In chapter twelve, Ruby arrives at the jewelry kiosk before the mall opens on the Friday after Thanksgiving to discover Harriett has created a new line of jewelry based on Ruby's key. The designs vary with some encrusted with jewels and others very plain. Harriett is anxious for Ruby's approval and she gives it. They sell several that morning. Harriett offers one to Ruby but she declines, saying she'll hold onto the key she has. She admits to herself that it's the key to the yellow house but has become a symbol of the life she led prior to her mother's leaving.
