Summary
In the Prologue, set 11 years prior, Shelby Tebow leaves the house late at night after her husband, Jason, returns home from work. She claims she is going running, but is really going to meet a lover. She does not feel bad about her lie because she knows that Jason is also having an affair. He has come home with a lipstick stain on his collar.
Shelby is running down the street toward the place where her lover is waiting when she notices her shoe is untied. She kneels in the street to tie it. A car barrels toward her and hits her before she has a chance to react.
