Summary
In “Chapter 21: Now,” Alice and Elizabeth chat in the hospital waiting room while Tom gets his scans done. Alice explains that she and Brian split up because she did not want kids. Now, she is reconsidering. Elizabeth reassures her that she can always have a fresh start with Brian. In Tom’s room, Dr. Jones delivers some bad news. The cancer has spread to Tom’s brain. It is incurable. The doctor asks Tom whether he wishes to be resuscitated should he go into cardiac arrest. Tom is shocked. He says that he would like to be kept alive for as long as possible and is hurt when Alice suggests that it might not be best to do so.
