Lia muses about her first flight to Los Angeles, where she sat beside a man with a briefcase full of candy that his daughter had given him and told him about her aspirations, flipping her freshly dyed blond hair over her shoulders. Eleven years later, she'd flown back, paying for two seats to be sure there was no baby beside her. She'd paid cash for the rental car in Philadelphia so Sam couldn't track her through a credit card.
