Chapters Sixteen through Eighteen Summary

Leaphorn discovers that it's 11:03 the following morning. He feels a cool air current and believes that to mean that he'll eventually find a second opening to the cave. James Tso has used dynamite to seal the opening through which Leaphorn entered, meaning that he's now forced downward or will have to try to dig his way out of the other opening. He continues down. About 8 p.m., Leaphorn finds level ground and hopes that to be a sign that he's nearing a second entrance. His hip is giving him problems at this point and he hasn't eaten or slept in many hours.
