Chapters Four though Six Summary
Leaphorn goes to Corporal Emerson Basti, a fellow officer who knows the land around the area very well, for information about places a person could find water in the region. He goes to check out each, believing that he'll find a clue about the man who tried to run him down. He has to search carefully to find one of the watering holes, but does locate it by watching where birds land for a period of time. When he reaches the spot, he finds tracks and discovers that "goldrims" and the large dog with him were there, along with a herd of sheep. Then he finds a shallow grave in which two sheep dogs are buried and surmises that the large dog killed the two sheep dog - a nearly-impossible feat.
