Summary

In Chapter 9, Mai makes herself stay awake until midnight so that she can call Montana at 10 in the morning. Mai is wearing a pair of Ba's pajamas so that she can be outside without getting so many mosquito bites. Mai has not talked to Renee to avoid answering any questions about Kevin. She first noticed him when he talked about a poem in school. Montana answers and immediately talks about herself. She is already at the beach. She believes a girl named Hadley is interested in Kevin. Montana calls out to Kevin to talk to Mai on the phone. Kevin asks about Vietnam, but the call drops after just a moment. Mai comes up with a lot of ideas from that brief exchange. She believes Montana's nervous chatter means she is interested in Kevin and predicts Montana will try even harder to gain...
