Alex watches his stepfather, Jake, split wood on the edge of the cypress grove near their home. Alex is amazed with the power in Jake's arms and thinks he will never be able to do that. Virginia, Alex's mother, calls him to her. She says she needs Alex's help in picking up some change she dropped in the grass. Virginia is largely pregnant with twins and cannot bend over easily.
