Stefan is a soldier in Hitler's Nazi Germany army in 1944. Like his father before him, he joined the army at a young age and devoted his life to the Nazi regime. But after witnessing much killing and the tactics of the Nazis under Hitler, Stefan wants to leave the army. He has become a major part of a project involving time travel, and it's in this role that he first encounters Laura Shane. In that reality, Laura is bent and twisted from an injury that occurred at her birth and Stefan, in love with Laura's writing and her attitude toward life, goes back in time (from Laura's adult life, but forward in time from his life) to stop the drunk doctor who performed the procedure.
