Chapter 6 Summary
Laura, having not been recognized at the Chinese restaurant, returns for more meals as she gives Stefan time to heal and plan. It's her thirty-fourth birthday, and Chris emerges from the motel bathroom with two cupcakes he'd bought the day before, complete with candles. Laura is delighted that he'd thought of her. When they open the fortune cookies after their take-out meal, Chris's first cookie is empty. The following two have contradictory fortunes that Laura realizes could also mean that he has no future to predict. Laura forces herself to believe that fortune cookies don't actually predict.
Stefan comes up with a plan for destroying the institute but says they need cash. Laura reluctantly calls on Thelma for help, who shows up with several thousand dollars, though she herself is dressed in a blond wig and driving a pickup borrowed from the gardener...
