Summary
In Chapter 56, Cork feels a sudden connection to Louise, now that he has found the place where she died. They talk about the path that led them to this discovery and Billy believes they were “supposed to find that stuff” (351). Cork says Liam would say they followed the evidence but Billy counters, saying Liam is white while he is Indian, and “I'm thinking Big John had a hand in this” (351). Billy says Big John was not a Marie and he wanted to prove that he was not responsible for Louise's death. Cork says they still have to identify the owner of the medallion. They discuss the value of the heavy gold chain and the conversation changes to what they would do with that much money, then Jorge asks about life in California. Billy is lonely there. He says other Indians have settled there...
