Summary
Part II is titled Murder. In Chapter 36, time is passing. By August, officials decide Mary Margaret was acting in self-defense, meaning there will be no charges. Some people may wonder if she had some other motive but because Liam had considered Duncan a suspect in Big John's death, no one mentions it. Duncan's mother died a short time later, possibly because of grief. In early August, a raccoon bites Jackson and Cork and Colleen take him to the vet. Dr. Dave looks at the dog, says there is nothing to worry about. During the conversation, Dave mentions Duncan and Big John. Cork has a terrible encounter with a newspaper customer who asks if Cork is related “to our squaw man sheriff” then calls Cork a “Red-skin brat” (233).
