Summary
In Chapter 13, Cork, Billy, and Jorge go to Jorge's house for lunch. Jorge's father died in Korea. His mother Carla is caregiver for Duncan MacDermid's elderly mother. Duncan is married to Mary Margaret. Cork seldom sees them except at church. Carla is in the apartment over the carriage house. She provides leftovers for the boys as a man named Nicholas Skinner arrives. He is Duncan's attorney. Usually called Nick, he speaks jovially to the boys and says Carla is needed at the main house. When they leave, Jorge says he believes Nick is romantically interested in Carla. Outside, Duncan calls Jorge “by the English version of his name” (77), identifies Billy as Indian, and says Billy is not welcome on the estate. Billy is obviously angry as he pedals away.
