Summary
In chapter 32 the narrator describes the movement of Russian forces to the front. The Russian plan is to encircle Paulus’ army. In chapter 33, a pair of planes open fire on Novikov’s encampment. Getmanov is fascinated by his first experience of warfare. During the day, Novikov considers in his thoughts all the different circumstances that could arise during their offensive. Later, Novikov and Getmanov go to visit Byelov. Getmanov scolds Byelov for having an affair despite having a family, an offense for which Getmanov is guilty himself. Getmanov then meets with Fatov and they discuss matters of preparation for their attack. Fatov is well prepared.
In chapter 34 Novikov returns to his camp. As he is walking outside he sees a group of young recruits idling. Novikov decides not to discipline them, but rather he encourages them. Nyeudobnov enters in on Novikov...
