The novel begins with Beau moving from his mother’s home in Phoenix to his father’s home in Forks. Beau’s father, Charlie, is excited to have him around for Beau’s last 18 months of high school. Beau becomes quickly popular at school—except with the one person who intrigues him: Edythe. Edythe avoids Beau at all costs and behaves strangely around him. She tends to stick around her gorgeous siblings: Archie, Jessamine, Royal, and Eleanor. They are the foster children of Carine and Earnest Cullen. Beau finds himself fascinated by Edythe. This irritates his female friends, who vie for his attention.
One morning at school, another student nearly hits Beau with their car, on account of black ice. Edythe stops the car with her hand, baffling Beau and saving his life. Gradually, Beau realizes that Edythe does not hate him at all. He learns from his friend Jules, who is a werewolf, that the Cullens are vampires. One night, Edythe saves Beau from getting killed by a gang who believe him to be a cop. They get dinner afterwards, and Beau assures her that he is unafraid. From then on, the two of them start dating. Edythe has to ignore her thirst for Beau’s blood when they kiss.
When Edythe introduces Beau to her family, they are all very accepting of him. They play baseball together before getting interrupted by a group of rivalling vampires. One of these vampires, Joss, is a skilled hunter. She becomes obsessed with Beau. Edythe knows this because she can read minds. Beau must leave Forks immediately. He lies to Charlie and says that he hates living with him in Forks before storming off. Archie and Jessamine bring Beau to Phoenix. Edythe watches over Charlie while the rest do their best to locate Joss. Joss manages to elude them.
Beau eventually gets a call from Joss, demanding to meet at the ballet studio by Beau’s mother’s house. Joss claims to have Beau’s mother with her. When they all go to pick up the rest of the Cullens from the airport, Beau sneaks off and takes a taxi to his mother’s place. From there, he gets another call from Joss urging him to come to the studio.
When Beau meets Joss, he discovers that his mother is not even there. Joss used VCR tapes to trick Beau over the phone. Joss starts physically torturing Beau. Beau passes out. The next thing he knows, the studio is burning and the Cullens are all around. Edythe has to turn him into a vampire, or else he will die.
Beau wakes up as a vampire at the Cullens’ house. His body feels strange, but he is glad to be a vampire. He knows this means he will never be able to see his parents again, since vampires must be kept secret from the world. The Cullens help Beau fake his death. His parents are devastated. Beau feels bad about this but does not regret his decision. He looks forward to spending an eternity by Edythe’s side. The werewolves accuse the Cullens of killing Beau. Beau meets with their tribe leader and assures them that he is not dead, but only a vampire. He tells them that he is happy with his choice.
