Cheng visits the local bookstore to try to find English textbooks to help her future students; however, these books have all been banned.
For this reason, Cheng can only accept students who have studied English in the past and have books they can use. She has a number of requests of students wishing to learn English. Her most interesting student is a man named Da De, who is a former leader of the Red Guards. He does not tell Cheng any of this, but instead simply says that he is a poor student who wants to learn English.
