Jefferson High School, Davisburg, Virginia 1959

Jefferson High School is a newly integrated school where both Sarah and Linda attend school. There is much tension in the school between the white and black students. The white students and faculty often bully and abuse the new black students, making them feel threatened, unsafe, and unable to focus on their schoolwork.

Bailey’s Drugstore, Davisburg, Virginia 1959

Bailey’s Drugstore is where Judy works. Judy, Linda, and Sarah meet there to work on their French project because Linda believes her father will not find her with Sarah there. Sarah kisses Linda at Bailey’s and does not want to return there afterward. Chuck gets drunk and involved in a fight with Bo Nash and several white boys outside of the drugstore. Linda waits with Chuck, while Sarah calls an ambulance to come and pick up the injured Chuck.
