Summary
In Lie 1, Sarah Dunbar and nine of her peers are the first black students to attend the newly integrated Jefferson High School in Davisburg, Virginia on February 2, 1959. As they approach the school on their first day, hordes of white students gather around the entrance, shouting profanities at them. Sarah recalls the preparations she went through with her father and the NAACP leader Mrs. Mullins to prepare for integration. The leaders told Sarah and her peers to ignore the provocations of the white students. Sarah begins to recite prayers as she walks toward the school and her nine peers join her. Reporters begin accosting them. Sarah looks after her sister Ruth. When a boy knocks the books out of Ruth’s arms, Sarah grabs her sister and leads her away from the confrontation.
