Summary
Chapter 4 – When Jacob awakens, he is greeted by a man named Nim and told he is in the house of Mr. Bentham. Jacob is tended to by a doctor and Emma. He has suffered a double concussion, a broken rib, and torn shoulder. Sharon arrives, seemingly relieved that Jacob is alright. Jacob thinks Sharon and the doctor can’t be trusted, but Emma thanks the doctor for his help. Emma makes Jacob promise her that he won’t ever die. He makes her promise as well. Sharon then explains he has no dealings with anyone who trades in peculiar flesh, and resents any such suggestion. Sharon reveals, however, that he has been waiting to bring Jacob to see Mr. Bentham for forty years, based on a deal that Sharon is given safe travel in and out of the Acre, and in thanks for owing...
