Freedom

By way of Libertie Sampson's first person point of view narration, the author explores the multiplicity of ways the individual might regard and experience freedom. As a young Black girl born into freedom in 1860s America, Libertie's understanding of freedom is not inherently defined by a life of restriction. Though she knows she has been named for her late father's dream of a "bright, shining future he was sure was coming," the conception of liberation and freedom is amorphous to Libertie (15). She has few rules living in Kings County, New York with her mother, Cathy. She spends time outside, lives in a rural community, and speaks and behaves as she wishes.
