Kings County, New York

Kings County, New York is one of the novel's primary settings. This is the county in New York where Libertie and her mother, Cathy live. They own a piece of land here, which Cathy inherited from her grandfather, a former pig farmer. Cathy runs a homeopathy practice out of their home. She also helps Black individuals escaping from enslavement to travel into the city through her residence.

Although Libertie enjoys a relatively happy childhood here, as she grows up her relationship with the place changes. Not long after her mother starts serving white women at the hospital, she sends Libertie away to college in Ohio. Libertie feels as if she is being banished.

Despite her attempts to disassociate from the place, it is difficult for Libertie to forget Kings County. She ultimately returns to be with her mother after the birth of her twins.
