Little Bighorn Performance
In "Liberation Day," the Performance the characters stage of the Battle of the Little Bighorn is symbolic of oppression. Mr. and Mrs. U. are using the Performance as a way to represent history the way they want the Speakers, Singers, and Company to see and understand it. The Performance presents a lopsided iteration of the Little Bighorn battle, and thus acts as a narrative commentary on the violence administered against Indigenous peoples.
Ginnie's Essay
In "The Mom of Bold Action," the essay that Ginnie writes by the same name, is symbolic of catharsis and control. In the wake of her son's encounter with the elderly man in town, Ginnie is overcome with helplessness and confusion. Writing the essay not only helps Ginnie process her feelings, but grants her a fleeting sense of autonomy over her circumstances.
