Love and Relationships

The metaphor that the author uses of the love for one’s work being like a romantic love shows how one can have the same passion and dedication for one’s job as one has for a romantic partner. Robin and Strike show this to be true in the Prologue when they talk about Robin coming back to work as if they were talking about getting together after a romantic break up. When Robin finally leaves Matthew, he thinks that she is leaving him due to her love for Strike. What she professes to him, however, is her love for detective work. Thus, she does not leave Matthew for another man. She leaves him for her work. Strike also shows that his relationship with Robin is a shared love affair with the job when the author continues the metaphor by having Strike ask Robin...
