The title of the novel symbolizes the need to let go which is something that many of the characters in the narrative need to do in order to lead fulfilled lives. Raphael should have let go of the feelings evoked by the way the members of his family treated him. If he had, he would not have gone to jail for murder. Strike needs to let go of his feelings for Charlotte so that he has a chance of love again. He also needs to let go of the idea that he is physically okay and to lose weight so that he does not have difficulties with his leg.
