Summary
In Chapter 11, “Thin and Smudge,” the days become indistinguishable. Annis and the others continue harvesting the fields. Finally one day, the lady has Emil and the men bury the master. Everyone returns to the fields after the funeral.
While gathering wood one day, Annis, Mary, and Esther encounter Bastian. Bastian begs Esther to flee the house. After Esther and Mary leave, Annis and Bastian discuss Esther’s fear and her future. Bastian tells Annis he admires her. Their conversation becomes intimate. They kiss and have sex.
Aza warns Annis against running away with Bastian. She reminds Annis of Mama Aza’s story. Annis knows “what happens when people escape” (248). However, she is just as afraid of staying at the house. Aza insists that if Annis wants to be free, she should run North and promises to “make a way” (250).
