Summary
In Chapter 4, “Rivers Wend South,” the “chained men and roped women” continue walking despite their pain (69). Annis repeats Aza’s name with every step. She cannot understand why she took “Mama Aza’s name,” but hopes she will return (69).
For weeks, Annis continues walking without seeing Aza. She tries to stay strong. She tries encouraging the women around her. The rivers are the most difficult parts of the journey. Annis focuses on her memories. She misses Sasha. While crossing one river, she hears the river’s voice. The river offers to hold, protect, and free her. Annis feels herself sinking, but refuses to give in. Finally, she emerges with the others.
