Summary
In Chapter 37, Roth is deeply moved by Elizabeth’s life story. He decides to leave out her personal details in the article, focusing instead on her intelligence and scientific achievements. The editor completely changes the article and focuses on Elizabeth’s attractiveness and shady family history instead. Mrs. Mudford submitted Madeline’s family tree assignment.
The article makes Supper at Six even more popular in Chapter 38. Elizabeth is hurt by what she believes Roth wrote. Even Madeline is heartbroken.
Elizabeth bakes brownies for five days in a row on Supper at Six to cheer herself up. Harriet tells Madeline she must head out for a bit and leaves the girl to watch the show. Wakely arrives to check in on Madeline. Just then, Elizabeth returns home. When Wakely tries to introduce himself, Elizabeth reminds him that they met at the funeral.
