Summary
Chapter 19 resumes when Mad is one year old. Harriet often babysits. She and Six-Thirty worry about Elizabeth’s haphazard parenting style. Meanwhile, Elizabeth mourns the father Calvin never had the chance to become.
One day, Dr. Mason stops by to check in. He wants Elizabeth to re-join his rowing team. She tries to refuse him, but he insists. Harriet agrees to watch Madeline on the mornings Elizabeth needs to row.
The other rowers glare at Elizabeth when she arrives for practice. Dr. Mason reassures her that this is normal in rowing culture. He has faith that this is good for Elizabeth.
