Summary
Hanna leaves the room but quickly returns announcing that there is some trouble in the building. She is followed by the Civilian. The Civilian demands that everyone stand up. He asks who Percy is. Percy explains he is an English journalist visiting his fiancée’s family. The Civilian responds to this with antisemitic slurs. He checks everyone’s name and becomes offended when Ludwig introduces himself as Professor Doktor Ludwig Jakobovicz and demands afterwards that everyone address him as Herr Doktor, which they do. The Civilian recognizes Hanna as a famous concert pianist and demands she play something. She obliges. The Civilian demands that Wilma is brought into the room, despite being told that she is seriously unwell and bedridden. Ernst brings in Wilma who cannot hear nor speak.
