Summary
In Chapter 18, for Alice, keeping an eye on Kagiso, a pregnant elephant, was a reason for her to get out of bed. Alice was not yet aware that she was pregnant as well. She looked back on her romance with Thomas like she would a summer affair. When Alice did find that Kagiso had delivered her baby, it was dead. She realized that Kagiso had not just lost her baby, but also her identity as a mother.
Alice didn’t notice she was pregnant until her shorts no longer fit her. Several days after the death of Kagiso’s baby, she drove to town and took a pregnancy test. It was positive. Back at the base camp she asked for a three-week leave of absence and called Thomas to tell him she wanted to visit his sanctuary. She didn’t tell him...
