Summary

The final chapter begins by situating Adam and Teresa’s relationship as it has evolved over her work translating his poems. He senses that her translations are impeccable and profound. As the summer approaches Adam jealously inquires after Carlos. Teresa says that Carlos is in Barcelona for work. When pressed on the nature of Carlos’ work Teresa claims he is a political organizer. Adam disdainfully moves the discussion on and mentions that he has never been to Barcelona. Teresa suggests that they take a trip there and leave that very evening. Adam agrees.

They take a short train ride to Barcelona and check into a posh hotel. Teresa takes Adam to an excellent restaurant and reveals, by demonstration, her fluency in Catalan, acquired from various stints living in the city. Adam is euphoric in Teresa’s company in Barcelona. They kiss on a bench...
