The novel opens with Interview 1. Leeds tapes Layla’s mouth while she is tied to the bed. Leeds goes downstairs to be interviewed by a detective he met online. Leeds is looking for help to find clues on what has happened to Layla.

Chapter 1 opens with Leeds playing in a band at a wedding. He sees Layla dancing. Leeds and Layla meet at the pool after the reception. They talk and flirt and introduce themselves. They share an immediate connection. While they are both in the pool, Leeds kisses Layla. Garrett (Leeds' band mate) and others cheer. Aspen (Layla’s sister and the bride) gives Leeds a pill.
