Disneyland
Disneyland is a symbol of Mike’s yearning for a father figure. He desperately wanted to experience the childhood magic of Disneyland, but his father’s absence and disdain for creating meaningful memories with his son is a continual disappointment and pain point. At the close of the novel, Mike finally goes to Disneyland with his family, including Andrew and Freddy, symbolizing his ability to let go of the pain his father has caused in his life and continue moving forward.
Truman
Truman is a gorgeous, waterfront neighborhood where Mike often cuts lawns. He notices the gated community and finds it exclusionary both in terms of race and socioeconomic factors. He wants to become more self-motivated and resourceful so he can find a way to make enough money to live in this type of community.
