Washington

Washington is the overarching setting for the novel and Mike has not traveled much outside of the West Coast. There is a large Mexican-American and Mexican population around him, but there are not many examples of them living luxurious lives, only the white characters. Mike dreams of escaping the small-town life of Washington.

Disneyland

Disneyland is a mythical location within the novel that Mike dreams of going with his father. He never goes as a child and always wonders about what else he missed in his childhood experiences. At the end of the novel, Mike goes to Disneyland with his “true” family, including the new additions of Freddy and Andrew and showing the power of achieving one’s dreams, no matter how late.
