Mike Muñoz
Mike is a young Mexican-American landscaper who dreams of making something more of his life. He has always struggled with the relationship he has with his father, and the novel opens with Mike experiencing disappointment as a young boy that his father never took him to Disneyland. As a younger boy, he did search for this father figure but was continually disappointed by his stepfather and then his mother’s other boyfriends. Mike shoulders most of the responsibility for taking care of his special needs brother. As such, he does not fully believe in the ability of other people to help him or provide anything for him that he cannot accomplish on his own.
Mike works as an entrepreneur and constantly searches for new jobs within the novel so that he can continue helping his mother support the family.
