Freddy Riley
Freddy Riley is the main protagonist of the novel, and the novel is told from her first person perspective. Freddy is seventeen years old, female, and a lesbian growing up in Berkeley, California in the modern era. The authors narrate the novel through Freddy’s inner thoughts via several emails she writes to Anna Vice, an online advice columnist. Freddy is portrayed as of half-Japanese descent, and drawn with long black hair, often wearing chunky sneakers, and chunky cardigans or sweaters and always carrying her phone. She works part time at a restaurant called Gertrude’s Organics, where they serve dishes named after famous lesbians.
