Invitations for Evil
As the narrator, Jamie describes a variety of situations — such as financial ruin, desperation, and sickness — that give people reason to invite evil into their lives. Jamie suggests that people inevitably invite evil in when he makes this point to his reader: “If we have free will, then you have to invite evil in” (139). While a person might not freely invite evil in, it makes sense that there are circumstances that lend themselves to the entrance of evil. For instance, when Liz is facing bankruptcy, she allows evil in when she exploits Jamie’s ability and tells Liz what her son is capable of doing.
