Summary
Between Zachary and Alex, Alex was the more serious and talented artist, but his poetry made him miserable. He was also unhappy with his marriage. He had wed Juliet because she was pregnant four years earlier, and they fought constantly.
Meanwhile, when Christine did finally join Lydia at the pub to meet Zachary, she felt an immediate rapport with him, though not a terribly strong physical attraction.
