Point of View
The author uses first person point of view throughout the book. The narrator changes depending on the name of the chapter. Book I: Jane is told from Jane's first person point of view. Book II: Katherine is her story in her own words. Book III is Mary's narrative. While first person point of view can seem like an elementary approach to fiction, it works well here and weaves in details that still allow readers to draw their own conclusions. The reader learns each girl's thoughts in her own words, and learns about the goings-on of the adults and other characters by reading each girl's observations. First person point of view also shows the growth of each character compared to where their stories begin, and it shows how each sister's point of view builds on the others.
