Lady Jane Grey
At the beginning of the story, Jane is 12 years old. She is a very good student who focuses on learning the classics in addition to the Bible. She is a strict Protestant and considers it the enlightened religion. Her father is also Protestant, so she tends to respect him more. She thinks Catholics are superstitious. After some conniving by King Edward VI's council, Jane is selected to be his heir. Her marriage is arranged to Guildford Dudley, the son of the council's leader. She was originally to marry Ned Seymour, but his father was convicted of treason which nullified their marriage promise. She is often referred to as the "Nine Day Queen." She is beheaded at the command of Queen Mary I for taking the throne after Edward VI's death.
