Summary

In Chapter 20, in December, Grace learned about the differences between a “sparrow’s heart” and the human heart (161). Sometimes Grace was so scared of the darkness in her room that she felt she had a sparrow’s heart. She saw the darkness as a bunch of creatures. She “never told anyone” about it, but Anna “scared it away” one night (163). She told Grace to say “the Lord’s Prayer backwards, then call out ‘Hag. Good Hag’” so her enemy would die of fright (165). Grace was too scared. Anna did it for her.

In Chapter 21, on New Year’s Eve, Grace learned about the early humans. Later, Jonathan returned with a surprise for Anna. It was a new purple car. Then they went out for dinner. Anna seemed happy until she came home, announcing that Jonathan was going to Brazil for a special on...
