Summary

In Chapter 7, Grace and her parents “went to the woods” for a Christmas tree (53). Because chopping a tree down made Anna sad, they tied a ribbon on one instead. They visited it on Christmas morning.

Grace’s favorite present was her detective kit. She pretended the house was a crime scene (54).

New Year’s Eve was Anna and Jonathan’s anniversary. Edgar babysat while they went out. After they left, Grace tried asking Edgar about God.

In the morning, Anna showed Grace a surprise. She had turned the spare room into a black room. On the walls, she had painted the cosmic calendar. They would use it to study the history of the universe for the next year. She had covered the room with “glow-in-the-dark stars,” too (56). After their first lesson on the Big Bang, Anna said they had to wait four months...
