Right vs. Wrong
One of the primary themes running through the novel is right versus wrong. As soon as Stevie and Susan Carol overhear the blackmailing scheme, they both know what Professor Whiting is doing is wrong. The rest of the novel involves Stevie and Susan carol trying to reveal the plot to the right people in order to stop the blackmailing and the throwing of the game.
The important thing about this particular theme is the age of the people responsible for outing the wrongdoing. Even though Stevie and Susan Carol are junior high school students, they make a difference. In this novel, the roles are reversed, where Stevie and Susan carol take on the roles of adults and do-gooders and the adults that are supposed to know better turn out to be behind the blackmailing scheme.
