Joe Makotozi ( Joe Mack)
He is the main character of this novel. He is captured when his test plane is brought down by a Russian Colonel named Zamatev. From the moment of capture, Mack begins planning his escape, with the help of a fellow prisoner, Pennington, Mack pole vaults the electric fence and escapes into the Siberian taiga. By the time Zamatev realizes Mack is gone, he is many miles from the camp.
From the first night on the run, Mack uses the training he learned from his Indian grandfather to help him survive the sub zero temperatures of the Siberian winter. He plans his escape using the same path his ancestors used years before him through the Bering Straights.
