Summary
In past-tense narration, Ivik (whose name translates into a blade of grass) describes how she became aware of being different from other girls, hints of that awareness starting when she was a child and becoming clearer as she moved through adolescence. She also describes discovering that unlike the other girls she knew, she was not interested in being with boys, or men, sexually; she did, however, prefer to hang out with them. She describes becoming less and less uncertain, more and more sure of herself, and eventually accepting that she was the way she was. She also describes how, after she made that acceptance and told her family, her parents essentially cut her off – an abandonment which hurt a lot.
