Summary

Part IV takes place in December of 1954. In Chapter 25, Lily and Kath returned to the Telegraph Club, this time with Kath’s friend Jean Warnock. Lily felt less self-conscious at the club than she had the last time, and allowed herself to focus on looking at Tommy. In the bathroom, a woman complimented Lily’s lipstick and asked her what the color was. Lily told her that it was red carnation. When Lily returned from the bathroom, she saw that Jean and Kath were with two other girls. Jean introduced them as Sally and Rhonda. Lily felt she was on the outside of the conversation. Jean used the words “hookers” (196) and “dykes” (196), which shocked Lily. Jean eventually laughed at Lily’s awkwardness, but Sally was sympathetic to Lily and told Jean not to tease her.
