Summary

Part II of Lo’s novel takes place during October and November of 1954. Chapter 10 opens with Shirley and Lily looking at job brochures at school. Lily spotted a brochure on Communism and took it without letting Shirley see. She offered to join the committee for the upcoming dance with Shirley in order to avoid being pressured into going to the dance with Will. Later, Lily asked Shirley if her parents had talked to her about the organization Calvin belonged to. Shirley said that they had lectured her and told her to avoid the group. Shirley insisted that Will and Calvin were not Communists. That night, Lily read the brochure on Communism in her room and was struck by the provocative language used to characterize those drawn to the ideology, describing their lust for power.
