Summary
Jude awakens from a dream of water in the midst of a terrible drought that has swept Lapvona. Jude has lost his farm and his lambs, and the other villagers have taken to eating worms and dirt, even robbing Jude as punishment for his refusal to feed them lamb meat. Jude, wearing Jacob’s fancy shoes, decides to walk down to the lake.
Meanwhile, Marek is fast asleep in Villiam’s castle. His life is free of chores, and he has plentiful food to eat thanks to Villiam’s healthy appetite. Lispeth, Jacob’s former servant and romantic interest, has been assigned to take care of Marek. Marek wanders downstairs to the great hall, where Villiam is eating grapes. Villiam asks his jester, Clod, to draw a picture of him and Marek.
He then asks Marek to tell him a riddle, which Marek obliges...
